COMPREHENSIVE APPRAISAL OF INTERNS' PERFORMANCE
Bharatheeya Vidya Nikethan College
of Teacher Education, Kallekkad, successfully conducted a school internship
program involving 104 student teachers placed across 19 selected schools. These
interns represented seven optional subjects—Commerce, English, Mathematics,
Natural Science, Physical Science, Sanskrit, and Social Science. Each intern
underwent five structured classroom observations, conducted by trained teacher
educators, mentor teachers, and peers, ensuring a holistic evaluation of their
teaching competencies.
The internship program emphasized the practical application of pedagogical theories, subject mastery, classroom management, and the integration of ICT tools in teaching. Interns were observed for their lesson planning, student engagement techniques, communication skills, assessment strategies, and reflective practices. Across all subject areas, interns demonstrated commendable growth in confidence, adaptability, and professional conduct.
English and Social Science interns effectively employed storytelling and group discussions to foster student interest, while Mathematics and Science interns showcased innovation in using models and experiments. Sanskrit interns maintained linguistic clarity and cultural sensitivity, and Commerce interns adeptly connected theoretical content to real-life applications.
The multi-dimensional feedback system allowed interns to refine their practice through regular guidance. The involvement of mentor teachers from host schools enriched the process by providing contextual insights and practical advice. Classroom management skills notably improved over the course of the internship, reflecting increased maturity and preparedness for the teaching profession.
Overall, the internship program served as a crucial platform for bridging theoretical knowledge with classroom realities. The performance of the interns reflected their dedication, evolving professional identity, and readiness to embrace the responsibilities of future educators. Continued mentorship and professional development will further enhance their capabilities as competent, reflective, and compassionate teachers.
